180 Gram Vinyl, ECM Luminessence Audiophile Series
Originally released in 1981, Freigeweht is the debut album by keyboardist Rainer Brüninghaus, known for his work with Eberhard Weber's Colours band and later the Jan Garbarek Group. He emerges here as a highly original and idiosyncratic sound sculptor, joined by ECM stalwarts Kenny Wheeler on flugelhorn, drummer Jon Christensen, and oboist Brynjar Hoff. Christensen's uncompromising propulsion underpins Brüninghaus's lyrical, minimalist themes, which are evocatively fleshed out by Wheeler and Hoff's contemplative tones.
