He took the pop out of pop and made it Great Black Music, turning soul and R&B hits by Marvin Gaye, The Isley Brothers, and The Temptations into deep, funky jazz. Blacknuss, like The Inflated Tear and Volunteered Slavery, is Kirk at his most visionary — as deep as a soul record can be, and as hot as a jazz record has any right to call itself.
