For sixty years these recordings, made by Deutsche Grammophon at the Tours and Lucerne Festivals in 1965, slumbered in the Yellow Label's archives. Carefully restored by Emil Berliner Studios, they are released here for the very first time. Richter felt he could play more freely in the concert hall than in the studio, and these performances reveal the pianist at the pinnacle of his powers — strikingly modern interpretations of Beethoven that never shy away from taking risks. The edition includes a recent interview with Richter confidante Elisabeth Leonskaja, an essay by Jed Distler, editorial notes by Markus Kettner, and numerous photographs, some previously unpublished.
