Alcest's 2010 sophomore album Écailles de Lune ("Moon Scales") took an audible step toward the band's black metal roots while deepening the lucent, dreamlike beauty of their debut. Founder Neige weaves calm, semi-acoustic passages and hypnotic melodies together with bursts of harsh riffing and shifting clean-to-shrieked vocals, in a sound variously tagged post-black metal, shoegaze, and blackgaze. Inspired by the sea at night, the album unfolds as a haunting tale of transformation and passage to another reality.
