Unlike most post-millennium country "outlaws," Hank Williams III has actually been fighting against something concrete. Rebel Within is the most straightforward country music Hank III had released since 2002's Lovesick, Broke and Driftin', with Billy Contreras's fiddle, Andy Gibson's steel guitar, and Johnny Hiland's guitar giving these songs a classic honky-tonk feel while adding just enough electric edge to keep it from sounding like pure retro-nostalgia. There's still an undercurrent of metal and punk creeping through tracks like the title cut and the breakneck finale of "Drinkin' Over Momma," but at heart this is strong, heartfelt work that proves Hank III hasn't turned his back on pure country.
