Mercyful Fate are the pioneering Danish heavy metal band from Copenhagen, formed in 1981 by vocalist King Diamond and guitarist Hank Shermann. With their occult themes and theatrical twin-guitar sound, they became a defining force in the first wave of black metal. 'The Beginning' is a 1987 compilation gathering the 'Nuns Have No Fun' EP tracks alongside BBC Radio 1 session versions of four early songs.
