Reflecting the film's 1950s setting, Burwell's score brings together the main elements of the movie using a jazz-influenced chamber ensemble. Starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, Carol is the story of a forbidden affair between an aspiring photographer and an older woman going through a divorce. The soundtrack also contains songs from the film, including "Easy Living" by Billie Holiday, which is prominent in the film as Carol receives the record as a gift and plays it multiple times.
