Released in 1958 on Verve, Coleman Hawkins and His Confreres captures the tenor saxophone giant playing with particular confidence and eloquence. His group of "confrères" is fortified by the Oscar Peterson Trio along with sit-in guests including Hank Jones (piano), Herb Ellis (guitar) and Roy Eldridge (trumpet). The relaxed atmosphere is especially evident on "Sunday," where Eldridge takes a brilliant solo, while Hawkins' voluminous, supple sound is best heard on "Honey Flower."
