The second album from composer, arranger, and producer David Axelrod, Songs of Experience (1969) follows his debut Song of Innocence. Recorded after the death of his son Scott, it is a work steeped in mortality and spirituality, again inspired by the 18th-century poems of William Blake and set to the urban bombast of a full Los Angeles orchestra with Wrecking Crew veterans supplying dark funk. The album includes "The Human Abstract" (later sampled by DJ Shadow) and "The Fly," pairing powerful orchestral textures, smooth jazz, and experimental sounds well ahead of their time.
