One of the funkiest organists of all time, Lonnie Smith first reached Blue Note listeners through standout sideman dates with Lou Donaldson before leading his own classics like Think! and Turning Point. On January 2, 1970 he returned to Van Gelder Studio to cut Drives, a showcase of his adventurous spirit and indomitable groove. Backed by Dave Hubbard (tenor sax), Ronnie Cuber (baritone sax), Larry McGee (guitar), and Joe Dukes (drums), Smith delivers funky takes on Edwin Starr's "Twenty-Five Miles" and Blood, Sweat & Tears' "Spinning Wheel," plus a fleet reading of Miles Davis' "Seven Steps to Heaven."
