Lou Donaldson had been a Blue Note stalwart since 1952 when he hooked up with funky drummer Leo Morris (aka Idris Muhammad) for a run of great groove-oriented albums, of which 1968's Say It Loud is a standout. Joined by trumpeter Blue Mitchell, organist Charles Earland and guitarist Jimmy Ponder, the alto saxophonist opens with a firmly in-the-pocket take on James Brown's "Say It Loud (I'm Black and I'm Proud)." Side One also delivers deeply soulful versions of Gershwin's "Summertime" and Ellington's "Caravan," followed by the hard-grooving "Snake Bone" and "Brother Soul."
