Thad Jones (1923–1986) was best known as the leader, composer and arranger of one of the finest big jazz bands of the 1960s and 70s. He was also a superb instrumentalist in smaller settings, and this Copenhagen session from October 1984 draws a vivid, intimate portrait of Jones the storyteller: reflective, free and full of tunes. Joined by pianist Ole Kock Hansen and bassist Jesper Lundgaard, he mixes relaxed authority, sly humor and a deeply personal sense of swing.
