Their 1981 self-titled album — split roughly half-and-half between Dave Alvin originals and well-chosen covers — became a cornerstone of the American roots-rock revival, powered by Phil Alvin's fervent vocals and guests including Gene Taylor, Steve Berlin, and New Orleans R&B legend Lee Allen.
