Underground is the seventh studio album Thelonious Monk recorded for Columbia, featuring Larry Gales on bass, Ben Riley on drums and Charlie Rouse on tenor saxophone. A prolific composer, Monk wrote all but one of the tunes here, each with its own story. The album's famous cover — depicting Monk as a member of the French Resistance — won a 1969 Grammy for Best Recording Package.
