Released in 1967, California Dreaming was Wes Montgomery's last album for Verve (aside from a collaboration with Jimmy Smith). It's an extraordinary orchestral date arranged by Don Sebesky, featuring soloists such as pianist Herbie Hancock and percussionist Ray Barretto, with the guitarist drawing magic from mostly pop material of the era. The album reached No. 1 on the Billboard jazz chart and No. 4 R&B.
