In 1995, D'Angelo — born Michael Eugene Archer and raised in Virginia by a Pentecostal preacher father — made an undeniable impact with his four-time Grammy-nominated debut Brown Sugar, ushering in the neo-soul sound with classics like the title track, "Lady," and "Cruisin'." He handled nearly all of the production, instrumentation, arrangement, songwriting, and vocals himself, positioning himself as a Hendrix-like figure in the lineage of Prince and Lenny Kravitz. This deluxe reissue brings the album back to vinyl via UMe.
