On January 20, 1963, bassist and composer Charles Mingus recorded in a single session one of the most personal and socially conscious works of his career, The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady. Conceived partly as a ballet and built from a single continuous composition divided into four tracks and six movements, it uses ornate ensemble orchestration to land somewhere between jazz and folk. The result is some of the most dramatic and powerful jazz composed in the 20th century — in Mingus's own words, "evidence of my soul's will to live."
