Elvin Jones, one of the true giants of jazz drumming, recorded Genesis in 1971 after several years leading his own band following his immortal work with the John Coltrane Quartet. The session has a spacious, almost cinematic feel, giving the players room to work through melodic compositions while always pushing forward into unexpected territory. Saxophonists Frank Foster and Dave Liebman intertwine in spellbinding fashion, with plenty of room to showcase Jones' virtuosity — an album that reveals itself slowly, with new delights on each listen.
