Power of Soul is the third record as a bandleader by jazz drummer Idris Muhammad, who began his solo career in 1970 after years as a sideman for George Benson, Lou Donaldson, Grant Green, Ahmad Jamal and Pharoah Sanders. It was produced by Creed Taylor, founder of CTI, and engineered by Rudy Van Gelder. The line-up carries arrangements and compositions by Bob James and Grover Washington Jr., with performances from Randy Brecker, Joe Beck and Ralph MacDonald — which is a large part of why Muhammad's work ended up sampled on so many hip-hop records.
