Various Artists - Jazz Is Dead 27: Joyce & Tutty Moreno - LP

Two architects of Brazilian sophisticated samba join Adrian Younge for the 27th entry in the Jazz Is Dead series.

Vocalist and guitarist Joyce Moreno and drummer Tutty Moreno were pushed toward these sessions by the encouragement of their late friend João Donato, and after his sudden passing the record became a tribute to him. You can hear that weight in every bar: saudade, collective improvisation and a lifetime of musical partnership. Joyce's own compositions like "Mandala," "Uaná Eté" and "Janeiro" sit next to Younge instrumentals where her voice works like a horn or a flute, melody without words. Closing track "Círculo Vicioso" sets a Machado de Assis poem in Portuguese.
