This album is also noteworthy as a recording that captures the moment when the talents of an illustrious lineup, including the then nearly unknown John Coltrane and Red Garland, blossomed. DISC 1 begins with "Round Midnight", composed by Thelonious Monk, followed by Charlie Parker's "Ah-Leu-Cha", Cole Porter's "All of You", and Tadd Dameron's "Tadd's Delight", presenting the repertoire that Miles performed with his band at the time. The album was produced by George Avakian.
