A superb and under-recognized recording, Crisis is one-third of a trilogy of extraordinary albums — alongside Broken Shadows and Science Fiction — from Ornette Coleman's small groups of the late '60s and early '70s. Captured live, it opens with a rendition of "Broken Shadows" itself and features deeply probing solos from Coleman, tenorist Dewey Redman, trumpeter Don Cherry and bassist Charlie Haden, whose own "Song for Che" receives one of its finest readings. On purely musical grounds it ranks among Coleman's most satisfying works.
