In October 1955, Chet Baker and his quartet gave a series of concerts in France, and the recordings that followed formed the private journal of an artist incapable of hiding his emotions. Volume Two was recorded on October 24, just three days after pianist Dick Twardzik's passing, with only bassist Jimmy Bond remaining from the original trio alongside French pianist Gerard Gustin and Swedish drummer Nils-Bertil Dahlander. Falling back on eight standards including "These Foolish Things," "Summertime," and "Lover Man," the whole session exudes a kind of sadness that's impossible to put down.
