Recorded just three days after his label debut Doin' Allright, Dexter Calling finds him leading a potent quartet with pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones. The set opens with the soulful hard bop gem "Soul Sister" before shifting into high gear on numbers like "Modal Mood" and "Clear the Dex," with the stunning ballad "Ernie's Tune" and a joyous reading of Charlie Chaplin's "Smile" to close.
