Horace Parlan - Up & Down - Tone Poet LP
$38.99
180g Vinyl LP, Tone Poet Audiophile Series, Mastered from the Original Analog Tapes
The bluesy, soulful pianist Horace Parlan is best known for his work with Charles Mingus, but his early-1960s run of Blue Note dates as a leader is essential hard bop. 1961's Up & Down caps that streak, anchored by his trusty trio with bassist George Tucker and drummer Al Harewood and featuring guitarist Grant Green and tenor saxophonist Booker Ervin. Highlights range from Ervin's hard-swinging opener "The Book's Beat" to the plaintive ballad "Lonely One," written by Babs Gonzales for Billie Holiday.
