Released in 1966 on Impulse!, Meditations captures John Coltrane's late-period group in transition — his classic quartet of McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones joined by tenor saxophonist Pharoah Sanders and drummer Rashied Ali. Recorded November 23, 1965 at Rudy Van Gelder's studio with producer Bob Thiele, the suite-like program pushes Coltrane's spiritual jazz into denser, freer, more transcendent territory.
