Sun Ra was a master of misdirection, and mislabeled tape boxes are legendary among Ra archivists. This collection began as a misidentified 7-inch reel discovered by Michael D. Anderson of the Sun Ra Music Archive — a stellar-quality solo piano performance once marked as a 1979 Carnegie Hall date. After research by Ted Gioia and others, it was identified as a mostly unreleased July 1977 performance at the downtown NYC jazz café The Axis-in-Soho, rounded out with 1979 studio recordings.
