A little-known tenor saxophonist deserving of much wider recognition, Teddy Edwards made two Pacific Jazz albums including 1960's impressive Sunset Eyes, a showcase for his rich, full-blooded sound that dispels any notion that all West Coast jazz was placid. Drawn from three sessions with three different quartets, including his working band with pianist Joe Castro, bassist Leroy Vinnegar, and drummer Billy Higgins, highlights include "Tempo de Blues," "Takin' Off," the title track, and a stunning reading of "I Hear a Rhapsody."
