Twenty-six kilograms of turntable: a metal-sand-filled plinth on magnetic feet, an inverted ceramic-ball bearing, a 10.3kg aluminium platter and a ten-inch tonearm with four interchangeable Sorbothane-damped counterweights. No cartridge — you choose.

The Xtension 10 Evolution is a mass-loaded, magnetically decoupled turntable, and every one of those words is doing work. The plinth is MDF filled with metal sand, which is dense and, more importantly, lossy — it converts vibration into heat rather than storing it and giving it back. That plinth then floats on three magnetic feet, so the sub-chassis is decoupled from whatever the deck is standing on rather than rigidly coupled to it.

The platter weighs 10.3kg on its own. It is TPE-damped aluminium with a vinyl layer bonded to the top surface, so the record sits on a material with a similar impedance to itself rather than on bare metal. It runs on an inverted bearing with a ceramic ball. A precision DC motor drives it through an integrated Speed Box DS generator circuit, which synthesises a clean AC waveform for speed stability rather than relying on the mains.

The tonearm is a ten-inch design — Pro-Ject’s current PDF names it the Highend 10″ EVO; a good deal of third-party writing still calls it the 10cc Evolution — with 254mm effective length and 8.5g effective mass. Four Sorbothane-damped counterweights are supplied, covering cartridges from 4 to 14g and tracking forces from 10 to 30mN, and no cartridge is fitted. This is a deck bought by people who already know what they want on the end of the arm, and we are happy to fit and align whatever you choose.

One published figure we will not repeat without comment. Pro-Ject’s web page gives wow and flutter as ±0.01% maximum. Their own PDF spec sheet for the same deck gives ±0.08% maximum. A belt-drive turntable measuring ±0.01% would be an extraordinary result, better than essentially any reference deck ever measured, and we think the web page figure is a typographical error. The PDF figure of ±0.08% is entirely creditable for a deck of this class. Both are listed below. Make of them what you will.

Specifications

  • Type: Mass-loaded belt-driven manual turntable
  • Cartridge: Not included. The arm accepts cartridges from 4 to 14g using the four supplied counterweights
  • Tonearm: Ten-inch. Pro-Ject’s 2025 PDF names it the Highend 10″ EVO tonearm; much third-party writing still refers to it as the 10cc Evolution
  • Effective tonearm length: 254mm
  • Effective tonearm mass: 8.5g
  • Overhang: 16mm
  • Offset angle and mounting distance: Not published
  • Tracking force range: 10–30mN (1.0–3.0g)
  • Counterweights: Four Sorbothane-damped counterweights supplied, covering 4–14g cartridge weight
  • VTA, azimuth and anti-skate: Not published in Pro-Ject’s current materials for this model
  • Platter: 300mm TPE-damped aluminium with a bonded vinyl top layer, 10.3kg
  • Bearing: Inverted stainless steel with a ceramic ball. Pro-Ject’s web page describes the support as antimagnetic while the PDF describes it as magnetic — the two documents contradict each other and we are reporting both
  • Plinth: MDF filled with metal sand, high mass and non-resonant
  • Feet: Three magnetic feet decoupling the plinth from its base
  • Motor: Precision DC motor with an integrated Speed Box DS AC generator circuit
  • Speeds: 33, 45 and 78rpm, electronically selected with no accessory required
  • Wow and flutter: Pro-Ject publishes two conflicting figures: ±0.01% maximum on the product page and ±0.08% maximum in the PDF spec sheet. We regard ±0.01% as implausible for any belt-drive turntable and believe the PDF figure to be the real one, but we are not going to silently overwrite the manufacturer
  • Speed variance: ±0.09% maximum on the product page; ±0.08% in the PDF
  • Signal-to-noise / rumble: 73dB. The product page labels this signal-to-noise; the PDF labels the same value as rumble at −73dB
  • Output: Connect it E 5-pin-to-RCA phono cable supplied
  • Power supply: External supply, 15V DC / 1,600mA; mains input 220–240V / 50Hz
  • Power consumption: 2W in the PDF; 4W maximum on the product page
  • Dimensions: 480 x 235 x 400 mm (W x H x D) with the lid closed; 480 x 495 x 535 mm with the lid open
  • Weight: 26kg net
  • Supplied accessories: Record puck, Connect it E 5P-to-RCA phono cable, dust cover, power supply, four counterweights
  • Country of manufacture: Handmade in Europe. Pro-Ject does not narrow this to a specific country for this model
  • Warranty: Two years from date of purchase, extendable to three years by registering the product with Pro-Ject and subscribing to their newsletter. Cartridges, styli and drive belts are wear items and are excluded. Pro-Ject states that warranty is administered by the local distributor and that terms can vary by region; no separate United States term is published. Coverage requires purchase from an authorised dealer — The ’In Groove is one.
