Among the most important progressive rock bands of the late '60s and early '70s, Soft Machine emerged from the UK (Canterbury) underground in 1967. Released in 1970, Third was their most successful and ambitious album — the beginning of their journey away from psychedelic roots into jazz and contemporary electronic music. Consisting of four side-long compositions, it is widely regarded as one of the best progressive rock albums ever recorded.
