The Art of the Sub-Chassis, Consistently Refined: The Fully Manual TD 1600 Pairs Thorens' Legendary Stabilized Floating Suspension with the Flagship TP 160 Knife-Edge Tonearm and True Balanced XLR Output
The TD 1600 is the purist's take on Thorens' modern TD 160 successor — the same suspended-sub-chassis architecture and TP 160 tonearm as the TD 1601, in a fully manual deck for the listener who wants nothing between them and the record. The classic recipe is all here: wooden plinth, two-part machined aluminum platter with internally routed belt, precision-ground belt with adjustable tension, and an acrylic dust cover.
Three conical springs support the sub-chassis from below rather than hanging from the top board, and a strongly tensioned steel wire anchors the sub-chassis against lateral movement — eliminating the stagger that plagued vintage suspended decks and allowing only pure vertical motion. The result is the forgiving, footfall-immune isolation a floating sub-chassis is famous for, with far more precise geometry than the classics ever managed.
The 9" TP 160 tonearm — designed by Helmut Thiele — rides a magnetically stabilized knife-edge bearing for maximum tracking accuracy and takes standard SME bayonet headshells for quick cartridge swaps. The electronically controlled synchronous motor draws clean power from the included TPN 1600 external linear power supply, and true balanced XLR outputs alongside the RCA pair make it a natural partner for low-output MC cartridges. Mount your favorite pickup, cue by hand, and enjoy.
