This was Charles Mingus's first recording with a working band of his own, issued on his enterprising Debut label and the first group to carry the Mingus Jazz Workshop banner. Recorded live, it's among the earliest examples of the inspired interplay Mingus demanded from his musicians. "Work Song" was his first composition with a socially conscious title, while "Percussion Discussion" is a rousing duet with Debut partner Max Roach — an important milestone in the Mingus saga.
