Color Changes is one of flugelhornist and trumpeter Clark Terry's finest albums. Rather than a typical jam session, Terry assembled an octet and enlisted arrangements from Yusef Lateef, Budd Johnson, and Al Cohn, making rich use of these individual stylists — among them Jimmy Knepper, Julius Watkins, Seldon Powell, Tommy Flanagan, Joe Benjamin, and Ed Shaughnessy. The material, with originals by Terry, Duke Jordan, Lateef, and Bob Wilber, is both fresh and rare, and the interpretations always swing.
