Conceived as a soundtrack to an unrealized stage play about a monster-ghost love story, the self-titled debut by Dead Man's Bones — the duo of Zach Shields and Ryan Gosling — grew into an album of its own. United by a shared obsession with ghosts, the pair scrapped the costly stage production but kept the songs, recording a haunted, lo-fi set backed in places by a children's choir.
