Trumpeter Donald Byrd and baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams formed one of hard bop's great partnerships in the early 1960s, and this masterful April 1961 quintet session captures them in peak form. Remarkably, it went unreleased for nearly two decades. The date also marks the very first Blue Note recording session for a young Herbie Hancock, who shines throughout — especially on "Chant" and "Great God."
