Released in 1951, Masterpieces by Ellington was Duke Ellington's first LP and one of the earliest long-players ever made. Freed from the three-minute limits of the 78 era, Ellington and Billy Strayhorn stretched out into full concert-length arrangements of his classics, captured with one of his great classic line-ups before the departure of Johnny Hodges, Lawrence Brown and Sonny Greer.
