Recorded in December 1950, Masterpieces By Ellington was Duke Ellington's first LP and one of the earliest records to take full advantage of the new long-playing format. Freed from the three-minute limit of the 78 RPM era, Ellington and his orchestra stretched out with extended, uncut concert arrangements of three signature songs plus the surprise-laden 'The Tattooed Bride.' It is also notable as one of the last sessions to feature the classic lineup of Johnny Hodges, Lawrence Brown and Sonny Greer. The harmonically rich mono sound remains astonishing for any era.
