Still riding the success of his triumphant 1956 Newport Jazz Festival appearance, Duke Ellington in 1958 pared his touring orchestra down to a nonet dubbed the Spacemen and cut this lone project for Columbia. The larger-than-life small-group sound spotlights three soloists — Clark Terry on flugelhorn, Paul Gonsalves on tenor, and Jimmy Hamilton on clarinet — across Ellington staples and outside material alike. Reissued on audiophile vinyl by Pure Pleasure.
