Sleeping with the Past is Elton John's 22nd studio album, released in August 1989 and recorded in Denmark, where it became his best-selling record. Dedicated to writing partner Bernie Taupin, the songs were conceived as a tribute to the 1960s R&B and soul icons the pair admired, including Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding and Sam Cooke. It yielded "Sacrifice," his first solo UK number-one single, which helped carry the album to the top of the UK chart.
