1973's Gentleman is the last of Fela Kuti's early-1970s transitional albums, just before he brought all of Afrobeat's signature ingredients together. The title track skewers the colonial-era inferiority complex that led some of Africa's new elites to reject African style and culture in favor of European imports, while "Fefe Naa Efe" and "Igbe" round out the set with Fela's pointed social commentary.
