Recorded in 1971 with Ginger Baker behind the board and sitting in alongside fellow drumming legend Tony Allen, Why Black Man Dey Suffer was originally deemed too controversial for release by Fela's label at the time. The title track is a history lesson on the oppression of the African man, while the B-side contrasts the corruption of the upper classes with the humble lives of the poor in Lagos' Mushin district.
