Saxophonist-clarinetist Budd Johnson and soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy step to the fore — Lacy's solos on Monk's "Straight No Chaser" and John Lewis's "Django" rank among his finest pre-free playing — with trumpeter Johnny Coles a sunny, extroverted foil. A magnificent, too-often-neglected album that still sounds fresh.
