Herbert von Karajan's admired 1972 recording of Verdi's Messa da Requiem reunites him with the Berlin Philharmonic and the Wiener Singverein, joined by soloists Mirella Freni, Christa Ludwig, Carlo Cossutta and Nicolai Ghiaurov. For Deutsche Grammophon's The Original Source series, the original four-track tapes were remastered in 100% analog quality at Emil Berliner Studios, cut directly from the masters with no tape copies, no digital processing and nothing unnecessary in the signal path. The result offers greater clarity and dynamics with far less noise and compression than earlier editions.
