Unknown until 2004 and unheard until 2018, these 1963 recordings by the classic John Coltrane Quartet — Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones — are, as Sonny Rollins put it, "like finding a new room in the Great Pyramid." Recorded at the end of a two-week run at Birdland, the music captures one of the most influential groups in jazz history both at the peak of its powers and reaching toward new, exploratory directions that would shape the course of jazz. This deluxe edition adds seven bonus alternate takes.
