German jazz pianist Jutta Hipp remains one of the most intriguing and little-known figures in Blue Note history. A brief presence on the mid-1950s New York scene, she recorded this 1956 date — a relaxed, high-level blowing session with tenor saxophonist Zoot Sims, trumpeter Jerry Lloyd, bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik, and drummer Ed Thigpen. Highlights include the up-tempo "Just Blues" and the gorgeous ballad "Violets for Your Furs." It proved to be her final recording before she left the music scene behind.
