The Etna λ Lambda takes its name from Sicily’s Mount Etna, and it sits directly below the flagship Atlas λ Lambda. It shares a good deal of design philosophy with the Atlas but executes it differently, with a strong emphasis on engineering efficiency — the aim being performance further beyond the sum of its parts than the parts list alone would suggest.

The body is the most obvious expression of that. A solid titanium core is machined with non-parallel surfaces to inhibit internal reflections, then mated to a slightly undersized, asymmetric, mirror-black anodized duralumin outer body that locks over the core like a tightly fitting jigsaw. Core and body are augmented with bronze and stainless-steel resonance control rods and pressure-fitted into a pre-stressed, solid, void-free structure of multiple materials and complex internal shapes. The constrained-layer effect dramatically reduces each material’s individual resonant signature, and the resulting stiffness benefits transients, dynamics and resolution.

Inside is a yokeless dual magnet system and Lyra’s X-shaped signal coils, shared with the Atlas. Compared with a traditional square former, the X-shape lets each channel operate with greater independence from the other, which improves tracking, channel matching and separation, and lowers crosstalk-induced distortion. Earlier X-coil cartridges from other makers paid for those benefits with poor efficiency — either high internal impedance from larger coils, or low output that stresses the phono stage. Lyra says its own mathematical analysis and testing produced an X-core shape that not only beats previous X-core designs on efficiency but surpasses Lyra’s earlier square-coil cartridges too.

The cantilever is a diamond-coated solid boron rod mounted directly into the cartridge body through a high-pressure knife-edge system. Lyra’s reasoning is worth understanding. A phono cartridge is an inherently inefficient transducer — Lyra puts the figure for cartridges in general at around 5 to 10 percent, meaning only a small fraction of the vibrational energy entering from the groove becomes electrical signal. The damping system absorbs some of the rest, but much of it reflects around inside the cartridge as internal echoes. You can hear this yourself: play a heavily modulated record with the power amplifier off and put your ear near the cartridge, and the “needle talk” you hear is exactly that uncontrolled excess energy. A direct cantilever-to-body path conducts it into the headshell instead, where the mass of the arm and plinth can dissipate it. Lyra says it remains the only manufacturer mounting the cantilever this way.

The Lambda in the name is a suspension revision rather than a new model. Lyra’s post-2008 New Angle cartridges used tapered dampers that did two jobs at once — damping cantilever motion, and pre-loading the cantilever so that applying tracking force brings the coils into alignment with the magnets. Lambda splits those jobs apart: flat elastomer discs handle damping, and a separate support pillow handles the pre-load, so each part can be made from a material suited to its single task. The New Angle benefit is unchanged; stability and consistency improve.

Lyra positions the Atlas as the more refined, elegant and voluptuous of the two, with the Etna the more outgoing personality — a choice of character and system rather than a straightforward ranking. Three versions exist: the standard stereo Etna λ Lambda described below, the single-coil-layer SL at 0.25mV, and a true Mono.
