We Insist! Max Roach's Freedom Now Suite is a landmark 1960 protest jazz record, conceived by drummer Max Roach and lyricist Oscar Brown Jr. as a response to the civil rights movement. Featuring the searing vocals of Abbey Lincoln and tenor saxophone legend Coleman Hawkins, the suite traces African American history from slavery to the fight for freedom in Africa and America. It remains one of the most powerful statements jazz has ever made.
