Starting with this album, he launched a sextet (six-member lineup) newly featuring the up-and-coming alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley. John Coltrane and Red Garland deliver powered-up performances, and Miles's trumpet is also in top form. A flawless, powerful sound unfolds throughout the entire album. The title track is a landmark that signaled the opening of the "modal jazz" format, which can be considered one of the starting points of modern jazz. Its approachable theme melody and Miles's playing, with the number of notes stripped down to the extreme, are thrilling.
