The genuine Nagaoka replacement stylus for the MP-500 and MP-500H — a line-contact diamond on a boron cantilever.

The MP series is built so that the part which wears is the part you replace. The JN-P500 is not simply a diamond: the assembly carries the stylus, the cantilever and the suspension components, which between them do most of the work of following the groove.

The line-contact profile is the whole reason for the MP-500, and it is in this assembly. A line-contact tip presents a long, narrow flank to the groove wall rather than a rounded one — sitting deeper, following high-frequency modulation an elliptical tip rides over, and spreading the tracking load across more of the wall so it wears records less. Fit an elliptical aftermarket stylus and you have an ordinary cartridge in an MP-500 body.

It pushes on and pulls off by hand, with no realignment and nothing disturbed in your overhang or azimuth. Tracking force is the MP-500's 1.3 to 1.8 g.
