Pianist Nate Morgan (1964-2013) was a central figure on the Los Angeles jazz underground and a core member of the circle around bandleader Horace Tapscott's Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra. Retribution, Reparation was the second of two LPs Morgan recorded for Tom Albach's Nimbus West imprint — a confident, politically charged statement of spiritualized modal jazz. With Danny Cortez on trumpet and Ark stalwart Jesse Sharps on saxophones, the frontline is explosive, while Fritz Wise and Joel Ector hold down the rhythm section beneath Morgan's forceful, Tyner-like chords. Recorded in Los Angeles, October 1983; engineered by Dennis Moody.
